Letters: Execution end sought

Now is the time for a moratorium on the death penalty in Texas. Recent surveys in the state have shown that public opinion is shifting fast, with the lowest-ever-seen support of statesanctioned executions. The recent case of Melissa Lucio has brought this to the forefront of many locals’ minds, as there is the very real possibility that Melissa is not guilty of murder, and yet she came within two days of being put to death by Texas. In fact, it is very likely that the state has executed at least five innocent people in the post-Furman era.

We, the people of Texas who strive to be morally just, cannot risk ever doing this again. The only way that we can ensure this occurs is to work toward abolishing the death penalty in Texas, as so many other states have done before us.

A first step in that direction would be a moratorium on it — a first step that, I believe, would receive significant public support.

On a personal note, as a local midwife, it is my absolute joy to welcome new Texans to life here, and it breaks my heart to hear of the state choosing to end Texans’ lives, regardless of the crimes they have committed. I do not believe the state should take “a life for a life;” we need to end this cycle by ending the death penalty.

Stop Biden’s

money grab

It is important that our U.S. Congress, Democrats and Republicans, stop playing political games with the suffering of American taxpayers, and actually investigate the distribution of Joe Biden’s $6.5 trillion package approved and distributed last year, 2021.

Biden keeps requesting more millions and billions and Americans never find out where their money went. All we know is that there are a lot of new millionaires cropping up among some progressive-socialists who keep using Ukraine as a money-requesting scheme. Americans need to be assured that money actually goes where the real Ukrainian suffering is.

It has also been reported that only 9% of this huge COVID-19 bite actually went for COVID-19 relief. American taxpayers deserve a more truthful, non-secretive and more transparent form of government.

Mission

Stop delaying

SpaceX flights

As we read about SpaceX wanting to launch rockets to orbit, which it already is doing in states like California and Florida, the Federal Aviation Administration says the SpaceX program at BocaChicaBeach doesn’t have the proper paperwork to continue with its launches. Really!

The FAA again pushed back its permit decision until the end of May. Until it gets squared off it will be on hold.

I know some time back some tests that SpaceX made caused some explosions, but they were taken care of.

Can’t Cameron County of Brownsville city commissioners do anything about it?

It’s proven that SpaceX hired locals. Mr. Elon Musk donated to help the poorest city in the Nation.

Just weeks ago Gov. Greg Abbott said he would do anything in his power to keep the company from moving anywhere. He said it’s here to stay; in other words, if it ain’t broken, why fix it?

Let’s get this project on the go. Our economy and the Valley need SpaceX.
