Letters: Surprise disasters

For want of a nail the shoe was lost,

For want of a shoe the horse was lost,

For want of a horse the rider was lost,

For want of a rider the battle was lost,

For want of a battle the war was lost,

For want of a war the kingdom was lost.

— A proverb by Benjamin Franklin

What may seem as not that important at first may be a disaster in the end.

Be careful what you wish for.

For want of low gas prices they voted Republican,

For want of a Republican they lost a democracy,

For want of Republican they got an autocracy.

Is driving your big SUV worth losing your democracy?

The price of gas is a temporary thing,

An autocracy is forever like Russia, China, North Korea, etc.

Donald Trump has openly expressed that he wants to be president as long as he wants to and then pass it on to one of his family. The GOP is trying to make this possible. You think this is absurd?

Did you ever imagine that an amoral, lying charlatan, a conman sociopath, could ever be the president of the United States? It speaks volumes about the American state of mind.

“The greatest fault of the spoiled, lazy American is lack of imagination.”

— A saying by Osama Bin Laden.

City name

explained

The April 18 edition had a letter translating Matamoros as “kill Muslims,” but that is not what it’s name means. In 1826, the governor Lucas Fernandez dispatched a decree to change the name of the city to Matamoros, in honor of Mariano Matamoros, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence, who participated along with José María Morelos.

I was under that same impression until a couple of years ago when I read a book written about the history of our area.

Opposing

viewpoint

Imelda Coronado loves to point her finger at progressives, but she needs to remember that three fingers of her hand point back to herself, so after reading her frequent diatribes about what is wrong with America and justifying the acts of her Republican Party, it is time for a factual rebuttal.

Her latest rants:

1) List Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as incompetent to make comments on complex economic issues, but AOC has far better qualifications, since besides being a bartender and learning to listen to people, she also graduated cum laude from BostonUniversity with a bachelor of arts degree in both international relations and economics. So yes, AOC is able to speak on economic issues!

2) List climate change as a guise for the rich to get richer. The Keystone Pipeline is exactly that — a pipeline only, but the type of oil is tar sands oil, with its thick, dirty, corrosive properties, which poses a far greater hazard than conventional oil. The oil is headed to Texas ports for a reason — to be shipped overseas while the petcoke or carbon residue of tar sands refining pile up and produce toxic dust storms for those who live near them and are usually near minority neighborhoods. Keystone would contribute little to U.S. energy independence, a major reason for National Nurses United and nurse opposition.

Isn’t it time that Ms. Coronado do some actual objective research instead of parroting the current Republican Party’s fact-less vitriol?
