San Benito CISD announces graduation date

SAN BENITO — Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ability of having in-person graduation ceremonies was in a bit of a limbo.

However, on Tuesday, state officials announced they will allow socially distant ceremonies to resume.

The San Benito High School Class of 2020 commencement ceremony will be held Friday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bobby Morrow Stadium.

District and high school administrators met Wednesday to discuss the feasibility of an outdoor ceremony that complies with Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive orders and guidelines related to public health.

The school district’s inclement weather plan is to hold the ceremony on Saturday, June 13, at 9 a.m.

“To ensure the safety and health of our graduates, staff and guests, specific restrictions and protocols are currently being outlined,” a post on the school district’s Facebook page states. “The district will provide all graduates and their families with the information once all the details have been determined.”

According to school district officials, the plans are subject to change due to the fluid nature of COVID-19.

“We thank our seniors and their parents for their patience as we considered the most feasible and safe plan to publicly recognize our SBHS Class of 2020 graduates,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Carman stated in the Facebook post. “Parents, it has been an honor to have guided your children through their public school journey as well as through this unprecedented time.”
