A murder suspect is now in police custody after he was caught being smuggled back into the United States from Mexico following a vehicle chase that happened Tuesday afternoon, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety press release.
Authorities had an arrest warrant out for Eliezer Morales, 30, of McAllen, in connection to the death of 25-year-old Raymundo Martinez-Gutierrez, of Honduras. He is now in the custody of the McAllen Police Department.
Just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, a DPS trooper attempted to stop a black Chevrolet Tahoe on Levee Road and Military Road in Mission, but the driver refused to stop and a chase began which ended on FM 494, according to the release.
Inside, troopers found three people illegally present in the U.S. and Morales who’s been on the run since December of last year.
At 8:07 p.m. on Dec. 19, McAllen police responded to a call in reference to a disturbance in progress in the 2800 block of Business Highway 83, according to the initial news release.
The caller told police that a vehicle crashed into a business and someone was passed out inside the vehicle.
Once there, officers found Martinez slumped over in the vehicle and unresponsive.
EMS determined that Martinez was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Martinez was then transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the release said.
“In the subsequent investigation, Responding Officer(s) determined that the victim had been involved in a domestic disturbance at the 2700 Block of Date Palm Ave.,” the release said. “Upon departing the scene of the disturbance, the victim was shot by suspect(s).”
Along with Morales, McAllen are also seeking Jose Govany Ipina-Rosales and Ana Karen Ramirez who are thought to be from Mexico.
Police believe the victim and the suspects are known to each other.
The McAllen Police Department is seeking information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts and is urging the public to come forward with any information surrounding the incident.
