A couple in Lyford began to argue about their relationship Wednesday evening when the boyfriend decided to point a knife at her in a threatening manner, according to a news release from the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office.

Pedro Cortinas, 31, was then charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he fled the residence.

At about 9:13 p.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Simo Road regarding an unwanted male at the location, the release said.

Once there, deputies made contact with a 27-year-old woman who identified Cortinas and stated that he left the scene in a gold Chevrolet Impala.

She added that Cortinas arrived at her residence and began arguing about their relationship when he grabbed her arm and “pointed a knife at her in a threatening manner causing her to be in fear of serious bodily injury,” the release said.

Cortinas allegedly gripped her arm so hard that deputies were able to see markings on the woman’s arm.

A while later, a Raymondville police officer observed the gold Impala on North 10th Street.

Upon further investigation, Cortinas was placed under arrest and the knife described by the victim was located inside the Impala and recovered as evidence.

Cortinas was then transported to the county jail where was booked.

According to the release, the investigation remains ongoing.
