The Edcouch-Elsa ISD Board of Trustees unanimously named Alda T. Benavides lone finalist for the position of superintendent Wednesday.
Benavides has served as the district’s interim superintendent since the departure of former superintendent Gregory Rodriguez in January.
“Thank you so much for your faith in me, and I’ve enjoyed working with all of you,” Benavides told trustees Wednesday. “And I hope to continue to work with all of you, and all the principals and central office staff and the parents. Wonderful community and thank you for your trust in me.”
A career educator, Benavides previously served as superintendent of La Joya ISD before retiring in 2019 and is a current board trustee of that district.
On being named interim, Benavides told The Monitor she felt her experience in education compelled her to come out of retirement and pledged to approach the job with high standards and an open ear.
“Thank you Dr. Benavides, appreciate everything you’ve brought to Edcouch-Elsa ISD…,” Board President Rolando Lozano said Tuesday.
Edcouch-Elsa trustees are currently considering making a $30 million-some bond push as soon as November.
