Attention all motorists! The wait is almost over, according to the Texas Department of Transportation they are preparing to open the new McAllen to Edinburg direct connector at the Pharr Interchange in mid-July.

Drivers will be able to access the new connector by taking the Sugar Road exit in Pharr, remaining on the left and then merging onto a temporary access ramp that’s for northbound traffic. The temporary ramp between Sugar Road and Cage Boulevard will not provide access to eastbound Interstate 2.

According to the release, soon after the new McAllen to Edinburg direct connector opens, the Harlingen to Edinburg connector one will close for demolition and reconstruction.

During that time, drivers traveling on westbound Interstate 2 in San Juan will be directed toward the Cage Boulevard and Business 281 exit, and then use the right turn lane at Cage Boulevard to head north on the Interstate 69C frontage road.

There will be an expressway entrance ramp north of State Highway 495 or Ferguson Avenue that will provide access to northbound Interstate 69C.

TxDOT will provide additional detour routes as the demolition of the first direct connector occurs.
