U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers this week apprehended a 33-year-old man accused of a dog attack that killed a 40-year-old man in Rockport, Texas on Tuesday.
Authorities booked Mario Alberto Mendoza Pena into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday.
Mendoza is charged along with 33-year-old Guadalupe Carreon in the death of 40-year-old Lewis Flores, according to the Corpus Christi Caller Times.
Jail records indicate Mendoza remains in the county jail on a $100,000 bond.
CBP said Mendoza entered the United States through the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge when an officer discovered an arrest warrant from the Aransas County Sheriff’s Office for attack by dog involving death.
In a statement on Facebook, Aransas County Sheriff Bill Mills said the attack happened at 5 a.m. Monday after a report of a man calling for help.
That’s where deputies discovered Flores on the ground being attacked by several dogs.
“When the Deputy approached, they turned their aggression to the officer who fired and believes he struck one of the dogs,” Mills said. “All the animals fled the location and officers began CPR in an effort to revive him.”
EMS arrived and began providing medical attention for Flores, who was transported to an emergency room where he died.
Animal Control took some of the dogs into custody while authorities there are still trying to find two other canines involved in the attack.
The Caller Times reported that Mendoza will be extradited to Aransas County.
