The McAllen International Airport was awarded $6.2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration for drainage, erosion control, a pavement management study and airfield safety design, according to a news release.

“The federal funding awarded to our airport will help start and complete capital improvement projects aimed at passenger safety,” McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez said in the news release. “We are grateful for the support of our legislative representatives and their teams for their vested commitment in securing funding for our McAllen International Airport as we work together in enhancing airport infrastructure for the benefit of our community.”

The funding is part of $1.6 billion in Airport Improvement Program, or AIP, grants announced by the FAA this year for various projects to improve runways, airfields and airport facilities.

“McAllen International Airport works continuously in advancing infrastructure and equipment improvements by effectively requesting AIP funding from the FAA in collaboration with McAllen’s leadership and congressional representatives,” Director of Aviation Elizabeth Suarez said. “We are dedicated to ensuring that grant funds are responsibly allocated and utilized for the completion of these essential projects.”
