EDINBURG — The case against the 28-year-old Edinburg man accused of causing the death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper in 2019 after shooting him in the head following a pursuit is inching closer to trial.

Victor Alejandro Godinez is charged with capital murder of a peace officer and two counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer.

Trooper Moises Sanchez was shot in the head and shoulder on April 6, 2019, following a pursuit with Godinez after he allegedly fled a car crash on North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez Drive in McAllen.

Sanchez died later that year following complications from surgery for his injuries.

The two counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer relate to allegations that he shot at two other officers who were not injured.

On Tuesday, Godinez, his defense attorneys and state prosecutors appeared before state District Judge Letty Lopez to go over the questionnaire that will be presented to potential jurors.

During prior hearings, Lopez said the jury pool could be as large as 800 people.

A representative from the Hidalgo County Clerk’s Office confirmed with Lopez that they’d be assisting with the jury selection, which is currently scheduled for Sept. 20 and 21.

Lopez wanted to put any changes made to the language of the questionnaire on the record.

The judge concluded the hearing by setting Godinez up for another pre-trial hearing on Aug. 10.
