A north Edinburg commercial building has been deemed a total loss after a fire Thursday evening.

Edinburg Interim Fire Chief Ubaldo Perez said his department responded to a fire in the 1000 block of north Closner a little after 6 p.m. Thursday.

“The commercial building side of it was on fire,” he said. “We had heavy smoke coming from the building.”

Perez said the property was a warehouse connected to a skating rink.

Three people were evacuated from the warehouse portion of the building while 20 were evacuated from the skating rink, he said.

Perez said they were all unharmed.

At 9 p.m., Perez also said no firefighters were harmed.

Flames were visible within the building at that time as a ladder truck sprayed it down.

The interim chief said the building collapsed and seems like a total loss.

“We’re probably going to be here until tomorrow,” he said. “A fire like this, you don’t just send people in.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
