Antonio Garcia Garza

A 34-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of another man authorities found with gunshot wounds in rural Edinburg early Thursday morning, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Antonio Garcia Garza, 34, was arrested and is being booked into county jail for murder in addition to possession of a controlled substance and marijuana.

The charges stem from a shooting that occurred around 3:05 a.m. in the 6700 block of Argentine Road in rural Edinburg — details the sheriff’s office changed from a previous news release that originally indicated the shooting occurred on Argentine Street in rural Alamo.

Sheriff’s deputies identified the shooting victim as Agustin Anguiano Vega, 50, who was leaning against a Chevrolet pickup truck at the time of the shooting. Vega was standing by a Ford pickup truck when authorities arrived.

Garza told deputies he shot Vega after the two were in a “physical altercation”

A witness gave authorities a black handgun that she said Garza placed on a kitchen table following the shooting.

Investigators collected evidence “related to the shooting” during a search of the property, and also found “illegal drugs inside Garza’s black Chevrolet truck.”

Hidalgo County jail records indicate Garza is charged with possession of marijuana, less than 2 ounces, and possession of a controlled substance.

“Investigators spoke with the witness who stated she had seen the two men standing near each other and then heard gunshots,” the release stated. “She saw Agustin Vega had been shot and Garza ran inside the house holding a handgun.”

Vega was transported to McAllen Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 4:43 a.m. as a result of the gunshot wounds. An autopsy has been ordered.
