MISSION — Police here held a news conference on Monday to share a few details about a fatal police shooting.

Mission Police Chief Cesar Torres addressed media inside the police station, but he did not field any questions, citing the ongoing investigation.

Torres said that police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Dons Drive at approximately 10:53 p.m. Thursday in response to a domestic disturbance.

He said that a woman had notified police that she had been shot by her husband, who then fled the scene in a black truck. Not long after, police located the truck near Steward Road and Business 83, and attempted to stop the vehicle.

“The individual, the suspect in this case, engaged in a pursuit,” Torres said. “The individual ended up driving his vehicle on the oncoming lane and struck an SUV head on. As a result of that accident, the individual exited the vehicle and engaged our officers with a handgun.”

Torres said that police officers fired an undisclosed number of rounds at the suspect who died at the scene. He was identified as 38-year-old Jose Angel Cruz.

Torres said that Cruz’s wife was transported to a local hospital where she is currently in stable condition. The driver of the SUV was also transported to a local hospital, and she remains in critical condition.

Their identities were not released.

“I have decided to place the four officers on administrative leave with pay as a result of the incident,” Torres said. “This is a standard protocol. In addition, we are continuing to investigate this and therefore I will not be answering any questions.”

Torres said that he has contacted the Texas Rangers to assist with the investigation. The Mission Police Department is conducting the investigation of the initial shooting at the residence while the internal affairs unit conducted an investigation on the administrative side.

“I do want to add that family violence continues to be a problem within our communities,” Torres said. “So we ask our citizens and our victims that if they, or if they know anyone that’s a victim of family violence, to contact your local police department, in this case Mission Police Department, so we can get you the proper help. There are many, many programs out there that would help our victims of crimes.”
