The community non-profit organization Friendship of Women, Inc. will celebrate its work through an event called “The Power of Hope” on Thursday at the George Ramirez Performing Arts Academy, 543 E 11th St., in downtown Brownsville.

The event from 6 to 8 p.m. will feature a gallery walk of work by high school artists from Lopez Early College High School in Brownsville and Los Fresnos High School in Los Fresnos, with music by youth from Revival of Cultural Arts, or R.O.C.A.

Organizers are billing it as a wine and cheese social and opportunity to learn more about the important work of Friendship of Women, Inc.

“This event allows us to showcase our work and connect with the community, while raising much needed funds to provide services, support and housing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. By involving young artists, we hope to educate younger people about the issue, while promoting their artistic endeavors,” Executive Director Gloria Ocampo stated in a news release about the event.

Valley Regional Medical Center is the event’s title sponsor, with many other local businesses and individuals contributing to make it a success.

“In our work to support the well-being of our neighbors impacted by violence, we often hear traumatic stories and see the devastating and lasting scars violence has on women, men and children,” Ocampo also stated in the release.

“We are humbled by the trust placed in us and vulnerability of survivors to share their darkest moments with us. But there are also glimmers of light filled with hope and unity when survivors find their voice and are empowered. Hope, unity, family, love and support are all positive healing factors that foster a stronger more compassionate community. This event is celebrating the power of that hope.”
