The Harlingen CISD Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Veronica Kortan as the interim superintendent during a special meeting Monday.

“I am humbled at the confidence of the Board and extremely honored to serve in this role. I am proud to be part of the HCISD team because we are synonymous with innovation and providing opportunities for students that change their lives,” Kortan said in the release. “I want to thank Dr. Noyola for all she has done for our district and for her work to position the district to continue doing amazing things at HCISD.”

Cited as a longtime educator, Kortan has served in various roles from teacher to principal to assistant superintendent for Leadership and Innovation. According to the release, she founded Harlingen CISD’s Early College High School in 2007.

Her appointment follows the retirement of Dr. Alicia Noyola, who made the announcement last Wednesday. She was tapped for the top position in December 2020, after former superintendent Arturo Cavazos resigned after eight years on the job.

Hired at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Noyola guided the district “through perhaps its most difficult time in history” while marking accomplishments, officials stated.

The release stated that Noyola will assume the role of superintendent emeritus through Aug. 31 of this year to ensure a smooth transition for the district and the next superintendent.

Kortan will not be seeking the permanent position, but said she welcomed the opportunity to fill the role of interim superintendent during the open session, according to the release. As a result, the board of trustees approved to move forward with a nationwide superintendent search.

“I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Kortan. We thank her for stepping into this role,” board President Dr. Belinda Reininger said in the release.

“She has shown dedication and great leadership in several of our district initiatives and most recently with the development of our strategic plan. As a Board, we want to thank Dr. Noyola for all she has done and for her leadership.”
