We want to be very diligent. We want to be careful, we want to make sure that we make the right decision.

After over three hours of discussion in executive session Wednesday, Mercedes school board trustees once again took no action on naming a lone finalist for the position of superintendent.

Wednesday’s discussion was the third time the board has talked about permanent superintendent candidates in the past few months.

A failed push to name former interim superintendent Richard Rivera lone finalist for the permanent gig in December precipitated his departure from the district.

The board once again discussed candidates last month, but took no action.

Board President Oscar Hernandez said the public should not view the discussions as a concerning thing, describing them instead as a sign of diligence.

“We want to be very diligent. We want to be careful, we want to make sure that we make the right decision. So as a corporate body I have the greatest confidence in the board, that we will make the right decision for our students and our staff and our community,” he said.

Hernandez says he expects the board to once again discuss candidates sometime next week.

Wednesday’s special meeting was not livestreamed on the district’s Facebook page, as Mercedes school board meetings generally are. Hernandez said he made that decision because trustees discussed candidates in executive session — behind closed doors — and because the district streamed the board’s regular meeting Tuesday evening.

Wednesday’s discussion was the third time the board has talked about permanent superintendent candidates in the past few months.

“I just thought it was just one item. Just the interview process; there wasn’t too much of a dialogue with the public,” he said. “It was mostly just in executive session. So I decided to give the good folks of the Mercedes Independent School District a break, because we had a board meeting (the) previous day, so I didn’t want to trouble them for another three or four hours.”

Hernandez said there was no public discussion on candidates Wednesday.
