A 22-year-old Alamo man who allegedly posed as a 16-year-old Monte Alto school district student has been arrested.

In a news release, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said it received information on Friday that a man who was later identified as Elias Gandara Garcia was enrolled and posing as a student at the district.

Investigators contacted Garcia, who identified himself as a 16-year-old student.

Garcia, however, has a record.

He was booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on May 9 of last year on a charge of smuggling of persons, jail records show.

The La Joya Police Department was the arresting agency.

Those same records helped investigators identify him as being 22 years old.

The news release said Garcia spoke with investigators and witness statements and physical evidence resulted in his arrest.

He is charged with failure to identify and tampering with a government record.

Garcia remains jailed on a total of $10,000 in bonds.
