The Economic Development Corporation of Weslaco last week announced the appointment of a new member to its Board of Directors.

According to a news release, the Weslaco City Commission appointed Kristopher M. Garcia to the EDC board in February.

“With Garcia’s knowledge and business mindset, he will be a great asset to our exceptional team and contribute to the momentum of growth we’re seeing in Weslaco,” EDC Executive Director Steven M. Valdez said in the release.

Garcia, who is currently employed as an account executive at a local insurance agency, began his career as a general manager and head golf professional in the Professional Golfers’ Association of America from 2002 to 2014 in San Antonio, and later in Laguna Vista.

In 2014, he underwent a career transition when he took a job working in manufacturing and distribution commercial insurance as well as managing the South Texas Territories for Sentry Insurance. Since 2021, Garcia has been partnered with a local insurance agency, where he remains employed to this day.

“With this great responsibility assigned to me by the EDCW Board and elected city officials, it is all with the common goal of making Weslaco a better place to live, especially for the youth in our community,” Garcia said in the release.

EDC Board President Juan J. “JJ” Serrano Jr. said the board is honored to have Garcia.

“The knowledge that Mr. Garcia brings to the EDCW board derives from his expertise in business operations, organizational structure, and the insurance industry,” Serrano said.
