More rain is headed to deep South Texas later this week, according to a bulletin issued late Monday by meteorologists with the National Weather Service Brownsville-Rio Grande Valley station.

A cold front sweeping in late Wednesday will bring a pattern of rainfall that will be beneficial to crops and other plants “but could cause minor street flooding,” according to the bulletin, which predicted rainfall amounts between 1 and 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.

“Nuisance flooding and isolated flash flooding may occur with these rain showers,” the meteorologists reported. “As of today, the Weather Predication Center has Deep South Texas/Rio Grande Valley in a Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall, valid for Thursday into Friday.”

The chances for heaviest rainfall was forecast to occur intermittently Wednesday night through Friday night, according to the bulletin, which said isolated flash flooding was the most significant hazard expected with the rain event.

As of Monday afternoon, NWS had medium confidence in its forecast and held off from predicting accumulated rainfall totals because the numbers may change over the next few days.

“Stay tuned for updates throughout the week,” NWS advised, recommending that residents remove debris from drainage ditches, clean-outs and canals.

“In areas where heavier bands develop, nuisance flooding of poor drainage locations is possible,” said the meteorologists.
