HARLINGEN — Harlingen students will have access to much-needed scholarship money thanks to a fundraiser which concluded earlier this week.
The Harlingen Area Educational Foundation announced Thursday it had raised $76,000 since August through its 5th Annual Friends of HAEF.
That success came through the efforts of numerous city leaders, including three celebrities, said Belinda Cavazos, president of HAEF.
This year, those celebrities were Harlingen Supt. Alicia Noyola, Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 4, and Jacob Boggus, general manager of Boggus Ford Harlingen.
At Thursday’s ceremony, Jacob Boggus was crowned King Friend of HAEF for raising the most amount of money.
Cavazos-Zapata said the money raised in this event and at the Partners in Education luncheon in September is crucial to the futures of many students and their teachers.
This year, $55,000 in scholarships will be awarded to 55 students.
“Fifty-five students in Harlingen will receive a $1,000 scholarship,” she said. “This year we are also giving out $50,000 in Teacher Innovation Grants to teachers who are thinking outside of the box.”
The scholarships are awarded based on grades, community involvement, and individual need.
“It’s not just for a university,” she said. “Some of these kids want to go to trade schools. They also qualify for it.”
