Time running out to select name of new baby giraffe at Gladys Porter Zoo

Time is running out if you want to help select the name for the newest baby giraffe at the Gladys Porter Zoo.

The deadline to select a name is at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, and the winning name will be revealed Thursday, which is the giraffe’s first birthday.

Zoo staff have selected six names, and the public is invited to choose one name out of the six that will be given to the baby giraffe that was born last February.

The suggested names are Astro, Comet, Orbit, Jett, Apollo and Loki.

The latest votes as of Tuesday afternoon are as follows:

>> Astro – 131 votes

>> Comet – 62 votes

>> Orbit – 45 votes

>> Jett – 54 votes

>> Apollo – 42 votes

>> Loki – 159 votes

The new calf, a male, was born to Rocket and is anxiously ready to be named as his first birthday approaches, GPZ said in a news release.

The voting for the new calf began Feb. 15 on the GPZ website and lasted one week.
