Mission man whose passenger died in fatal Alton crash indicted

Walter Enrique Martinez

A Mission man accused of killing a 65-year-old man and sending two others to the hospital following a fatal crash in Alton last September is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

Walter Enrique Martinez, 42, is charged with intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle and intoxicated assault with vehicle causing serious bodily injury after crashing into a truck and killing Ernesto Gomez Sanchez, according to an indictment.

He was indicted on Jan. 24.

Martinez had been previously arrested for driving while intoxicated around the same time in 2021, jail records indicate.

The initial news release about the accident stated that the crash occurred on Moorefield Road south of FM 681, north of Alton, at approximately 12:03 a.m. on Sept. 24.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling northbound when he crashed into a blue GMC Sierra traveling southbound, according to the release.

Sanchez, who was a passenger in Martinez’s Mazda 6, died at the scene.

The two occupants of the Sierra were sent to the hospital with non-incapacitating injuries, as well as Martinez, who was transported to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center following his release from the hospital.

Martinez is set to appear before state District Judge Bobby Flores for his arraignment Wednesday morning.

He remains jailed on a total of $60,000 in bonds.
