One filing so far for Sharyland board election

As of Thursday afternoon, only one person — an incumbent — has filed to run in Sharyland ISD’s May board election.

The board has two seats up for election.

Long serving Place 1 Trustee Ricky Longoria is not running for reelection, while Place 2 Trustee Alejandro Rodriguez — first elected in 2020 — so far has no opponents in a bid to retain his seat.

Rodriguez is a criminal investigator from Mission.

“I have taken my position seriously, attended every board meeting, and plan to seek reelection on May 6,” he told The Monitor Friday. “I look forward to continue to serve the community in a professional and fiscally responsible manner.”

Longoria, an accountant who’s served on the board for 15 years, described his tenure as a success.

“Since day one, it has been my goal to leave the Sharyland school district in a better place and when I found it. In many ways I believe I have achieved that goal. During my tenure, I had opportunity to serve as president twice,” he wrote. “And on one of those occasions I led the passage of the bond issue that led to the construction of Pioneer High School. I was also instrumental in ensuring that every child had a computer in their hand, which was critical in ensuring continuing instruction during COVID.”

Longoria said he’s leaving the district in a financially sound place after terms on the board that saw the graduation of over 8,000 senior graduates from Sharyland ISD.

“I would like to thank the community for supporting and believing in me over all these years. It’s been humbling to be of service to such great people,” he wrote.

As of Thursday, no one had filed to run for Longoria’s seat.

The deadline to file for a place on the ballot is Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.
