Longtime Director of the San Benito Public Library Gerardo Salazar will retire Feb. 3, the City of San Benito announced Jan. 31.

Salazar, who served as library director for the past 13 years, has more than 20 years of professional experience and worked for both the City of San Benito and the City of Brownsville.

“Under Salazar’s leadership, the San Benito Public Library has continued to demonstrate a commitment to provide top-quality materials and educational resources to all its visitors,” city officials stated in a press release.

According to the release, Salazar worked with city administration to assure that all minimum financial and programming requirements were met during his tenure.

As a result, the San Benito Public Library was recently granted accreditation as a fully qualified member of the Texas Library System for the 2022-23 state fiscal year.

Salazar also helped bring several community-based programs to the library, including an Astronomy Program that will launch shortly after his retirement, the release stated.
