The Brownsville Public Utilities Board has announced a road closure related to its installation of a new 16-inch waterline that will connect a newly constructed 2-million-gallon elevated storage tank in Southmost to a main distribution line on Southmost Boulevard.

Portions of 30th Street from Southmost Boulevard to Lazy Acres Road will be closed from Jan. 30 through March 3, BPUB estimated. The closure will take place in three phases, first from Jennifer Avenue to Lazy Acres Road along 30th Street, then from Stanolind Avenue to Jennifer Avenue, and lastly from Southmost Boulevard to Stanolind Avenue.

The road closure announcement is in addition to BPUB’s plan to implement phase two of its traffic control plan for the segment of its waterline-installation project near Four Corners. Starting Jan. 23, eastbound traffic on Boca Chica Boulevard will be reduced to one lane starting at the intersection with Security Drive. The right-turn/yield lane on S.H. 48 (South Padre Island Highway) will be closed and traffic will be forced to go through the intersection, BPUB said.

The eastbound lanes on Boca Chica should be open by late March or early April, according to BPUB. At the same time, all closure dates are approximate and could change depending on the weather, soil conditions and “job provisions,” said the utility.

The new elevated water storage tank will replace two older tanks: one that used to be on Southmost Boulevard but was demolished in 2018, and the one located on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley campus.

“UTRGV’s elevated storage tank is scheduled to be demolished once the new (tank) is fully operational,” BPUB said.

The utility apologized for the disruptions to traffic and inconveniences caused by the waterline project, but said it will “provide reliability and improve BPUB’s water distribution system, in conjunction with the new 2-million-gallon elevated storage tank.”
