Sheriff says welfare check in rural Weslaco ends with homeowner shot

A welfare check at a rural Weslaco residence ended in the homeowner being shot by law enforcement authorities, Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said on social media Friday.

According to the sheriff, deputies from his agency responded to a “welfare concern” in the 700 block of Mile 3 1/2 in rural Weslaco, where he said neighbors “were concerned for children while shots were being fired in the home.”

The sheriff said on Twitter that the homeowner pointed a weapon at law enforcement who then shot the homeowner.

The name of the person who was shot, the person’s condition and additional circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been shared as the investigation is ongoing.
