Suspect hospitalized after shots fired, vehicle crashes

A man remained hospitalized Monday afternoon in the aftermath of a shooting and crash in the 2400 block of 30th Street in Southmost as Brownsville police pursued a suspect in a vehicle.

Spokesman Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department said officers received a call about 1:27 p.m. of a verbal dispute with family members.

As the officers were going to the call, they located a vehicle matching the description given, attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle refused to stop, Sandoval said.

“Somewhere along the pursuit shots were fired. The vehicle then continued and crashed into another vehicle in the 2400 block of 30th Street. The suspect got out of the vehicle and continued running on foot. He was apprehended shortly after that,” Sandoval said.

When he was apprehended, officers realized the subject was injured and took him to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Sandoval said officers at first thought the subject had been shot in the lower back, but the actual chain of events is under investigation to determine whether he was hit by a bullet, shrapnel, or the bullet had ricocheted.

Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation, Sandoval said.
