Police: Brownsville pedestrian at fault in auto-ped accident

A man accused of jaywalking was hit by a vehicle in Brownsville after he failed to stop walking on the street despite it being unsafe, police say.

According to Brownsville police, Ricky Joe Beede, 65, was jaywalking across International Boulevard at the 800 block on Tuesday at 6:11 p.m.

As Beede attempted to cross the road, an orange 2017 Hyundai was traveling northeast on the outside, and according to witnesses, Beede continued walking into the path of the oncoming vehicle.

“Witnesses at the scene confirmed the vehicle had a green light as it proceeded through the intersection,” the release said.

Beede was struck and the driver of the Hyundai remained at the scene of the incident, police say.

Beede was then transported to the hospital in critical condition but was eventually announced to be in stable condition.

Police say the accident investigation determined that Beede was at fault for not using the crosswalk and for crossing at a pedestrian red light.
