Alamo man sentenced for killing 46-year-old motorcyclist

Carlos Vasquez

A 20-year-old Alamo man who fled from authorities after hitting and killing a 46-year-old motorcyclist in 2019 pleaded guilty on Monday and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Carlos Vasquez pleaded guilty to killing Roger Duane Cavazos on July 21, 2019, when he struck Cavazos with his vehicle in the 1300 block of W. Frontage Road, just past North Alamo Road.

State District Judge Fernando Mancias sentenced Vasquez to seven years in prison with credit.

According to a Texas Department of Transportation crash report, Vasquez was driving a blue 2003 Chevrolet Silverado when he rear ended Cavazos, who was driving a 2006 Yamaha XVZ12 motorcycle.

The report said the motorcycle remained lodged under Vasquez’s front bumper for over a block until it fell off.

An obituary for Cavazos described him as a dedicated nurse who enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing.

Jail records show that Vasquez has been jailed since Sept. 12, 2019.

Rogelio Vasquez

Due to the nature of the plea, Vasquez will only need to serve four years of his sentence and will be released some time in 2026.

Vasquez’s brother, Rogelio Vasquez, was also charged with tampering with evidence after authorities found that he removed parts of the vehicle in order to impede the investigation. He spent a little over a month in jail.
