Sheriff: Driver opened fire, killed man after crash near Alton

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a homicide after the driver of a vehicle opened fire after a collision early Friday morning.

Deputies responded to Conway Avenue, just south of Mile 4, about 1 a.m. Friday, according to a tweet from Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra.

“Witnesses advised they heard what appeared to be a crash then saw the driver shoot the passenger and drive off,” the sheriff wrote.

Alton police stopped the fleeing vehicle and detained the driver, Guerra continued.

The passenger who was injured died from a gunshot wound.

Deputies continue to investigate the shooting.
