Harlingen police arrest man accused of robbing person at gunpoint

Harlingen police have arrested a 22-year-old man accused of robbing a person at gunpoint, but what was allegedly stolen was not revealed.

Jasper Austin Abernathy is charged with one count of aggravated robbery. His bond was set at $100,000.

The incident occurred Wednesday in the 800 block of East Taft Avenue, Harlingen police said in a media release.

According to the release, the victim told police Abernathy forced himself into the victim’s vehicle by breaking a window. The victim confronted Abernathy and he threatened to shoot the victim, the release said. Abernathy was armed with a gun.

The victim said Abernathy got out of the vehicle and left with the victim’s property, the release said.

Harlingen police responded to the area and gained access to a security video that showed Abernathy in the area. He was located at a nearby residence was taken into custody.

Abernathy was later arraigned on the aggravated robbery charge plus on an outstanding warrant he had with the U.S. Marshals.
