Shortly after the road closure to Boca Chica Beach was announced at about noon Friday, and as members of the Brownsville Police Officers’ Association were concerned about setting up for their annual fishing tournament scheduled for Saturday, SpaceX said it would buy all the tickets for the tournament so everyone could fish for free.

People planning to participate in Saturday’s tournament began voicing their concerns Friday on Social media after learning the road to Boca Chica Beach had been closed.

The BPOA received notice Friday morning that the beach would be closed and immediately reached out to SpaceX to see if an agreement could be reached to open the roads to the beach, according to Felipe Cepeda, president of the BPOA.

SpaceX told Cepeda it would purchase all of the tickets for the tournament so anyone from the public could fish for free.

SpaceX sent out a general alert shortly after noon Friday that Boca Chica Beach is now closed. A second alert was sent out shortly before 2 p.m. that the beach was reopened.

The Cameron County judge’s office sent out a notice Wednesday that there would be a road closure Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.
