A teacher died at McAllen Memorial High School on Friday.
Eduardo Calderon, 48, was a social studies teacher for the past nine years, a letter to the community said.
A spokesperson for the district said Calderon’s death was not suspicious in nature.
Grief counselors were available at the campus Friday and will be available to students, staff and parents on Monday.
A letter from Memorial Principal Pedro Alvarez Jr. described Calderon as “a beacon of light” at the school.
“He also served as a coach in boy’s soccer for several years,” the letter said. “He had a passion for his subject and the craft of teaching and coaching young minds.”
Calderon was also a US Army veteran, having served 10 years and retiring as a sergeant, Alvarez said. “He will be deeply missed,” the principal added. Alvarez’s letter says Calderon died Friday afternoon.
“Our condolences go out to his wife Maria Calderon and his family at this difficult time,” he added.
