A video posted to social media appearing to depict two students armed with weapons driving onto campus at Palmview High School Tuesday morning resulted in a law enforcement response, although La Joya ISD says at least one of those weapons turned out to be a fake.
The video that prompted the response shows the interior of a vehicle approaching a security guard box at a campus entrance.
The driver of the vehicle brandishes what appears to be a pistol, while the passenger holds a machete.
Text at the bottom of the video reads “Palmview Lobos” and displays the school’s mascot.
“Upon immediate knowledge of the incident, school officials acted swiftly and ensured the safety of all children on campus,” Palmview High School Principal Lionel Perez wrote in a letter to the community. “We identified and made contact with the students involved. The item used in the posting is a toy gun and has since been confiscated.”
Perez’s letter does not reference the machete in the video.
It’s not clear whether administration locked down the campus after becoming aware of the video or whether any law enforcement arrested anyone in relation to the video.
“We want to inform you that all children on campus were safe, and thanks to the response of our school officials children [were] posed no threat. Disciplinary action will be followed according to policy,” Perez wrote. “School safety is our number one priority, and our staff demonstrated our school’s ability and responsiveness to these situations.”
