The Edinburg man accused of killing a pregnant 18-year-old and her unborn child after striking her and an unidentified woman is scheduled to be sentenced Monday.

Carlos Santiago Rodriguez, 45, pleaded guilty to one charge of accident involving death, accident involving serious bodily injury and tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair in June.

Jail records indicate that Rodriguez has a history of drinking and driving.

At the time of the crash, Rodriguez had been serving 10 years probation after being convicted for his fourth DWI.

According to the initial news release, the victim, Lorena Perez, who was eight months pregnant at the time, and the unidentified woman stood by their vehicles as they poured gas at approximately 9:35 p.m. on North Alamo Road, south of 17 1/2 Road, when a Chevy Silverado traveling south struck them.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Rodriguez fled the scene and allegedly concealed, destroyed or altered the airbags and license plates of his vehicles in order to obstruct the DPS investigation.

Doctors tried to perform an emergency cesarean section in an attempt to save the baby but both Perez and her child died at the hospital, according to the indictment.

Rodriguez was originally scheduled for sentencing on July 21 but was ultimately pushed back.

He will now stand before District Judge Noe Gonzalez on Monday morning for sentencing.
