EDINBURG — An Edinburg man accused of killing an 18-year-old woman and her unborn child after striking her and an unidentified woman with his vehicle last year pleaded guilty Monday afternoon.

Carlos Santiago Rodriguez, 45, pleaded guilty to one charge of accident involving death, accident involving serious bodily injury and tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair.

According to jail records, Rodriguez has a history of drinking and driving and was serving 10 years probation after being convicted on his fourth DWI at the time of the crash.

On Aug. 1 of last year, Lorena Perez, who was eight months pregnant, and an unidentified woman were standing by their vehicle as they poured gas at around 9:35 p.m. on North Alamo Road, south of 17 1/2 Road, when a truck traveling south hit both women.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Rodriguez fled the scene.

Perez and her baby died at the hospital after doctors attempted an emergency cesarean section in an attempt to save the baby but ultimately failed.

Rodriguez allegedly concealed, destroyed or altered the airbags and license plates on his vehicle to hinder the DPS investigation.

The agency said in an Aug. 3, 2021 news release that Rodriguez turned himself in the following day.

Rodriguez is set to be sentenced July 21.
