Affected by a shortage of bus drivers, Brownsville Metro has cancelled some of its routes.

Brownsville Multimodal Transportation Department, which operates Brownsville Metro, made the announcement this week on its Facebook Page.

“Due to challenges with driver shortages, Brownsville Metro is temporarily canceling the following routes,” offcials stated on social media.

Gennie G. Garcia, deputy director for Brownsville Metro, said Thursday the transportation department is addressing the need to restore those routes and is “looking at solutions to attract and retain drivers.”

Brownsville Metro had some of its drivers retire, she said.

Garcia said Brownsville Metro is implementing the following strategies: CDL Driver Academy, up to $2,000 sign on bonus, paid on-the-job training, pay raises and a monthly performance and retention stipend.

The pay for transport officers/bus drivers is between $13.38 to $16.06 an hour.

As of Thursday, the affected routes included Routes 1 through 11. Hours of operation were also affected.

“Routes are expected to resume regular tomorrow, 8/5/2022,” the Facebook Page post stated.

Brownsville Metro will continue to update the public about reduction of service and when services are expected to resume back to normal, officials said.
