COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Rio Grande Valley saw a slight decrease this week before jumping back up, ending with 151 patients hospitalized due to COVID as of Friday.

Last week, COVID hospitalizations ended with a jump to 155 total patients on Sunday which then fell to 151 patients on Monday. Since then, the number of COVID patients steadily declined over the course of the week, reaching 144 patients on Thursday, until jumping back to 151 on Friday, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, or DSHS.

The 151 patients included 116 adults, 25 adults in intensive care units and 10 pediatric patients.

In Hidalgo County, COVID hospitalizations ticked up by the end of the week, increasing from 101 total hospitalizations at the beginning of the week to 104.

Hidalgo County reported a total of 2,371 new cases this week including 1,330 confirmed and 1,041 probable cases.

The county now has a total of 217,337 recorded cases of COVID-19. Those cases include 138,971 confirmed, 75,207 probable and 3,159 suspected cases.

This week, the county also reported an additional four residents died to COVID-related complications. Of the four individuals, three were unvaccinated. So far, a total of 3,939 Hidalgo County residents have reported died due to COVID.

Cameron County health officials also this week reported four of their residents died due to COVID-19, raising their total number of COVID-related fatalities to 2,268.

The county also reported 2,160 new cases this week which include 877 confirmed cases, 1,263 probable, and 20 self-reported cases from at-home tests.

In Starr County, there were 64 confirmed cases and 98 confirmed cases this week, according to DSHS. Willacy County reported 47 confirmed and 43 probable cases this week.
