Alleged Mission pool fondler makes first appearance in court

MISSION — A Mexican man received a total of $260,000 in bonds Thursday morning for allegedly fondling himself at the Bannworth Pool in the presence of children.

Jose Canchola, 62, of Guanajuato, Mexico, was charged with two counts of indecency with a child and indecent exposure.

At his initial appearance, Canchola said he worked for a moving company and that he was in the middle of becoming a United States citizen, though if convicted, Canchola can be denied citizenship and deported. He was still wearing swimming trunks when he appeared before a Mission municipal judge.

According to Mission investigator Art Flores, Canchola allegedly fondled himself underwater at the Bannworth Pool, located at 1822 N. Shary Road. Children that were present noticed him and notified their dad, who then reported him to the lifeguards.

The lifeguards then called police and arrested Canchola at approximately 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Canchola will be transported to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.
