Cameron County Commissioners Court Tuesday approved a contract between the county and U.S District 34 Rep. Mayra Flores that will allow the Republican congresswoman to have an office inside the county’s annex building in San Benito.

Flores attended Tuesday’s meeting where she introduced herself to the commission and others in attendance and reminded them that they “finally have a voice that will represent them in Washington.”

On June 14, Flores won a special election that was held to fill the seat that was vacated by U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, who resigned from the position earlier this year.

The space Flores will be using is the one the county leased out to Vela when he served as the District 34 representative, said Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. The San Benito County Annex is formally known as the Joe G. Rivera and Aurora De La Garza Annex Building.

Flores said she had already met with County Administrator Pete Sepulveda Jr. and Commissioner Pct. 3 David A. Garza to talks about the needs of the county and the lack of funding to the area.

“I saw that we have needs and not wants in Cameron County and my priority will be to bring the funding and the needs that we need here in Cameron County in the next few months and years to come, of course,” she said.

Flores said she is part of the Homeland Security Committee. “Border security is a top concern for all of us here, I believe that border security saves lives and also protects innocent children from child trafficking.” She is also on the Agricultural Committee.

“I am here to serve you, I am here to be your voice, I am here to learn from you and what your concerns are here in Texas District 34. I am in Washington not representing a political party but representing the people of Texas District 34,” she said.

Garza said he and Sepulveda met with Flores and presented her will 11 items that are not only important to the county but to the region as a whole. The items include the East Loop Project, I-69, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife.

Garza said the items were turned over to Flores’ office staff “so they could help move on some of these things that are a hindrance to us.”
