HARLINGEN — Newly elected Mayor Norma Sepulveda is planning to honor former Mayor Sam Lozano, the first Hispanic to win the city’s highest office more than 50 years ago.

Sepulveda will recognize Lozano’s years of service at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the city commission’s regular meeting at the Harlingen Public Library.

“I just think he served his community for a very long time,” she said Tuesday. “He served Harlingen for more than 20 years. He made history. He was the first Hispanic mayor and it was 50 years ago.”

Lozano, 96, who was first elected to the city commission in 1962, won the mayor’s office in 1970.

From 1977 to 1983, he served on the city commission before returning to the mayor’s office in 1983, going on to serve until 1987.

“I feel humbled and honored by this recognition bestowed by our elected officials in taking a moment to acknowledge not only my prior service but ongoing service to city government,” Lozano stated. “Current headlines reflect it’s challenging to be an elected officeholder. “
