Border Patrol agents stopped human smuggling attempts Tuesday at the Falfurrias checkpoint.

Agents referred a tractor-trailer passing through the checkpoint Tuesday for a second inspection after their K-9 unit was alerted by the vehicle. During their search agents found people locked inside the trailer. Some were hidden “among pallets of scrap metal” while another three were found in the “cab of the truck,” according to a CBP news release.

The inspection resulted in the rescue of 13 people who were determined to be from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Brazil.

The release gave no details about the driver or if anyone was arrested.

In the same week, border agents stationed in McAllen encountered four large groups in the Mission and Hidalgo area. According to the release the groups included “176 single adults, 190 family members, and 101 unaccompanied children.”

Similarly, agents stationed in Rio Grande City found two groups in the La Grulla area. Those groups consisted of “119 single adults, 145 family members, and 82 unaccompanied children,” stated the release.

This resulted in a total of six encounters with larger groups of people who entered the country illegally. Those within the groups were processed by Border Patrol.
