At least two Memorial Day events will be held on Monday honoring those troops killed in the various wars.

The first event will begin at 8:15 a.m. in front of Hanna Early College High School at 2615 E. Price Road.

The American Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1 of Brownsville will hold its 37th annual Memorial Day services.

In front of the high school is a plaque with the names of 28 Brownsville men who were killed in the Vietnam War.

Commander Rogelio A. Ochoa said the men attended Brownsville High School either at Palm Boulevard or at Brownsville High when there was only one high school.

Ochoa said 56 years ago on May 26, 1966, Brownsville got its first news of its first Vietnam War casualty. That was followed by 27 more until the last one was received June 5, 1972.

“We invite all Veterans, families, friends of our fallen brothers, neighbors, schoolmates to the ceremonies,” Ochoa said.

At 10 a.m. the annual Silent March will begin. The march will start at the H-E-B store on Central Boulevard and end at Veterans Park, also on Central Boulevard.

The annual Silent March draws at least 100 retired veterans, family members of the fallen troops and members of the community who want to honor those killed in the nation’s wars.

There will be a flag raising ceremony at Veterans Park and speeches remembering those fallen veterans. There will also be a 21-gun salute.

Those attending are encouraged to wear patriotic clothing and to take their own lawn chairs to Veterans Park. Light refreshments will be provided.
