The Progreso school district said police found a plastic toy gun in a suspicious vehicle that a concerned parent reported to authorities Wednesday.

“In the report, she indicated that she saw what looked like a firearm in the vehicle with three young men traveling in the car,” a news release stated. “Our school immediately contacted the Police Department and the schools were placed on high alert.”

Police investigating the matter found the vehicle parked in the student lot at the Progreso High School, which is where the plastic toy gun was round.

“At no time were any of our students in danger,” the release stated.

The district thanked the parent for their vigilance in reporting the suspicious activity.

“It is community cooperation like this one that truly highlights the underlying reality that student safety is a community-wide effort,” the release stated. “Speaking up and reporting suspicious activity is the first line of defense to protect our schools and community from events similar to what happened yesterday in Uvalde, Texas.”
