The corporate operator of Harlingen Medical Center, Mission Regional Medical Center, and Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco has received a national award for improving patient safety and health-care quality.

The 20th John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award was awarded to Prime Healthcare Services by the Joint Commission and National Quality Forum. The commission serves as the major accrediting body for health-care organizations in the United States.

“Prime Healthcare Services is commended for establishing a program to address social determinants of health,” the commission said in an article published on its website.

“The initiative, ‘Improving and Promoting Social Determinants of Health at a System Level,’ aims to help providers more effectively deliver patient care and reduce health-care disparities,” the commission added.

The Eisenberg Awards recognize major achievements by individuals and organizations to improve patient safety and health-care quality, with Prime Healthcare’s award presented for the category of “National Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality.”

Harlingen Medical Center and Mission Regional Medical Center were recently awarded the “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2022. This national honor recognizes Harlingen Medical Center and Mission Regional as among the top in the nation in protecting patients from preventable harm and errors in the hospital.

It marks the fourth consecutive year that Mission Regional received “straight A’s” for patient safety, having earned the Leapfrog award from 2019 through 2022. Harlingen Medical Center has received “straight A’s” for patient safety for two straight years.

“Maintaining the highest national standards for patient safety is something we strive for day in and day out,” said Kane Dawson, CEO of Mission Regional Medical Center. “This commitment to patient safety represents an inherent dedication by our medical teams to deliver safe, consistent, quality care to our community – today and for years to come.”
