Alberto Davila

WESLACO — Two men have been arrested in a 2014 shooting death after one suspect’s wife revealed to authorities that she had information about the cold case homicide.

Authorities with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Weslaco Police Department arrested Alberto Davila, 50, at his Los Fresnos residence Tuesday.

At about 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 2, 2014, authorities arrived at the 3600 block of East I-2 in reference to a call about a one-vehicle crash. At the scene, officers found a man, later identified as Daniel Salazar Burnias, 29, dead inside his vehicle.

During their initial investigation, investigators found various bullet holes in the vehicle along with multiple gunshot wounds on Salazar Burnias. They also found a 40mm handgun at the scene.

The case had been under investigation for the past eight years as a homicide, which an autopsy determined was the cause of death.

According to Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera, on March 20, 2020, police received a call from the Los Fresnos Police Department regarding someone who had information about the case.

Karen Sanchez Landeros told authorities she believed her husband, Alberto Davila, was involved in the 2014 shooting.

The Los Fresnos and Victoria police departments helped Weslaco police recover the weapon, and the Texas Department of Public Safety conducted the firearm and bullet analysis.

Authorities subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Alberto Davila and on Tuesday the U.S. Marshals found him in his home in Los Fresnos. He was arraigned on murder charges Wednesday morning by Weslaco Municipal Judge Juan Alvarez.

Davila is currently in custody and being held on a $1 million bond.

The chief also revealed police arrested a second suspect, however, he did not reveal the identity or any other information about him.

“At this time we have another person in custody for the homicide. At the time (of the murder) this individual was a minor, he is now an adult,” the chief said. No other information will be released unless the suspect is tried as an adult, pending a court hearing to make that determination.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the caliber of the handgun, and also for clarity regarding the release of information about the second suspect.
