COVID-19 hospitalizations across the Rio Grande Valley are continuing a downward trend, hitting a low of 35 total hospitalizations this week.
At the beginning of the week, there were a total of 36 patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 throughout the Valley. That dropped to just 35 patients on Tuesday and the total number stayed there for the remainder of the week, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, or DSHS.
Of the 35 people hospitalized due to COVID on Friday, 33 were adults and two were pediatric patients. Of those, ten adults were in intensive care units.
Friday’s total is also a more than 20% drop from the same time last week, when there were 44 patients hospitalized due to COVID in the Valley.
COVID-19 hospitalizations just in Hidalgo County also dropped significantly this week, starting out with a total of 34 COVID patients on Monday and dropping to just 20 patients on Friday.
The 20 patients included 16 adults and four pediatric patients. Five of those adults were in intensive care units.
Hidalgo County also reported a total of six residents died due to COVID-related complications this week. Three of the deceased were not vaccinated against COVID.
Their deaths raised the county’s total number of COVID-related deaths to 3,908.
Hidalgo County also reported 348 new cases this week. That included 182 confirmed cases and 166 probable cases.
In schools throughout the county, 15 staff members and 28 students tested positive. Since the beginning of the school year in August 2021, a total of 4,905 staff members and 16,796 students have tested positive.
In Cameron County, three residents died due to COVID-19 this week for a total of 2,234 COVID-related deaths there. Two of the deceased residents were not fully vaccinated.
Cameron County health officials also reported another 123 new cases this week. They consisted of 80 confirmed cases and 43 probable cases.
Starr County also reported 29 confirmed cases and six probable cases this week, according to DSHS data, while Willacy County reported four confirmed cases and three probable cases.
