In races for a place on the Mission and Sharyland school boards during the May 7 election on Saturday, incumbents seemed to be poised to defend their seats based on unofficial early vote tallies, while a $26 Edcouch-Elsa bond package appeared to be heading for failure.

In the race for Place 1 on the Mission CISD board, incumbent Veronica “Betty” R. Mendoza garnered about 62.13% of the vote with 2,461 ballots cast in her favor.

Mendoza’s challenger, Amanda Salinas O’Cana, had about 36.87% of the vote with 1,437 ballots.

The races for Place 6 and 7 were noticeably tighter, but incumbents were still pulling ahead.

Place 6 incumbent Petra B. Ramirez earned 1,940 votes for 52% of ballots cast, while challenger Dolores “Loli” Reyna had 48% of the vote with 1,791 ballots.

In the race for Place 7, Minnie R. Rodgers earned 57,89% of the vote with 2,200 ballots cast in her favor, while opponent J.C. Avila had 42.11% with 1,600 ballots.

Incumbents also performed solidly in Sharyland ISD.

Place 6 incumbent Noe Oliveira, who ran unopposed, earned 2,265 votes, while Place 5 incumbent Hector M. Rivera earned 1,875 votes for 72.24%.

Rivera’s challenger, Rene Morales, trailed significantly with 685 votes, or 26.76% of ballots cast.

The race for Place 7 on the Sharyland board was the only Hidalgo County school board trustee race to not feature an incumbent this election, with Keith Padilla leaving the seat undefended.

The three-way race for Padilla’s seat was tight as of press time.

Irene Becerra Thompson led the pack with 966 votes, or 36.55%, with opponent David Keith trailing by just a single vote.

The third candidate for that seat, Leonor Garcia, trailed by a more significant margin, with 712 votes, or 26.94%.

Meanwhile, over in Edcouch-Elsa ISD, a $26 million bond package appeared to be proving unpopular with voters as of press time.

The bond had received 499 votes against — or 46.23% of the vote — versus 429 votes in favor, or 46.23%.

That bond package was intended to make needed updates and repairs to district facilities, along with funding a new career and technical education building.

If approved, the bond would not increase the district’s total tax rate.

Edcouch-Elsa School Board President Chris Morales did not respond to multiple attempts for comment Saturday evening.
