Five COVID-related deaths reported in RGV

Hidalgo County officials on Thursday reported 196 people tested positive for COVID-19, in addition to four deaths related to the virus.

The four who died are individuals in the age group 70 or older, raising the county’s death toll to 2,751, according to a county news release. 

Of the 196 new cases, the county’s Health and Human Services Department reported 108 are confirmed, 72 are probable and 16 are suspected. 

The majority of individuals who tested positive Thursday were in the 0-19 years of age group, with 63 total cases. The next age group with the largest number of cases were adults in their 20s, with 42 cases. 

Overall, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County is 84,281. Of that sum, 56,071 are confirmed, 26,871 are probable and 1,339 are suspected. 

According to county officials, a total of 2,079 cases remain active. 

Officials also reported a total of 115 individuals are hospitalized in county hospitals, with 44 patients in intensive care units. 

Additionally, the county reported 233 more individuals released from isolation, raising that total to 79,451. 

As of Thursday, a total of 437,353 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 352,307 results returning negative. 

In Cameron County, officials reported 30 people have tested positive for the virus on Thursday, according to a news release, raising the total number of positive cases there to 38,312.

The county also reported one COVID-19 related death on Thursday, a Brownsville man in his 60s, raising Cameron County’s death toll to 1,569. 

Additionally, the county reported 211 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, raising the total number of those reported to have recovered to 35,511.
