Gov. Greg Abbott will be in the Rio Grande Valley Thursday for a news conference on the state’s “Save Our Seniors” initiative that was first unveiled in February.
Abbott, along with Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd and Major General Tracy Norris with the Texas Military Department, will be in McAllen to speak about the program, which distributes vaccines to senior citizens through drive-thru clinics or administers them directly to those who are homebound.
The initiative was first launched in Corpus Christi in February and has since expanded to several counties. On Tuesday, Abbott announced 25 counties would be participating this week, the fourth week of the initiative, including Hidalgo and Starr counties.
The counties are selected based on four factors: the number of providers serving the area, total vaccine allocations to the area over the previous 12 weeks, which counties were the least vaccinated when it comes to people over 65 years old and over 75 years old, and the equitable distribution of the vaccine across the state.
